Inclement Weather Plan
The School of Wonder is an outdoor-based educational program that meets in rain, sun, snow, and cold. In exceptional cases, the severe weather conditions may lead to some modifications or even cancellation of the program. For these very rare cases, we have a plan B and plan C prepared.
FOR AFTER SCHOOL
PLAN A:
In most cases, we will run our after school program as planned in Prospect Park West! On days that are cold or rainy, we may alter the activities to suit the weather conditions. For example, this may include using a tarp to construct a shelter, huddling up to play games and share stories, or creating art! Please prepare your child to dress appropriately for the weather conditions.
For rain: Tuffos, two-piece rain suits, comfortable rain boots, an umbrella, and extra layers packed in a water proof bags have all been helpful.
For snow: a warm winter coat, snow pants, hat, gloves, boots, and extra warm layers.
PLAN B:
In the case of heavy rain or very cold conditions, we will complete our activities at the Picnic House in the heart of Prospect Park. We will only spend extended time outside if the weather clears. In this case, the meeting points for parent pick-up and drop-off will be the Picnic House, and families will be notified before 12pm via email and WhatsApp.
PLAN C:
In the case that New York Public Schools are closed or dismissed early due to inclement weather, the after school program will be canceled as well.
FOR DAY CAMPS
PLAN A: We run the adventure as usual and prepare for the weather conditions.
If children can safely play and explore outdoors, we will run the adventure as planned. Prepare your child to dress appropriately for the weather conditions (rain or shine, hot or cold) and spend the day outside!
For rain: Tuffos, two-piece rain suits , comfortable rain boots, an umbrella, and extra layers packed in a water proof bags have all been helpful.
For snow: a warm winter coat, snow pants, hat, gloves, boots, and extra warm layers.
For the heat: a hat, cool clothing, plenty of water, and any extra tricks to stay cool.
PLAN B: We run a modified version of the program.
If the weather conditions create an environment in which we cannot safely run our adventure as usual but still permit us to achieve our mission, we will run a modified version of the adventure.
In most cases, modifying our adventure will mean changing our initial meeting point to Grand Army Plaza or the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. The School of Wonder has previously led incredible missions starting from these locations, which have provided us with more opportunities to be indoors while maintaining access to nature when the weather clears. If this is the case:
Plan to drop-off and pick-up at Grand Army or Brooklyn Botanic Garden and prepare your child to explore a new environment!
Prepare your child to dress appropriately for the weather conditions as described above.
Read the Changes and Cancellation Policy to know your options for credits, refunds, and make-up sessions.
In other cases, this will look like reducing the hours of the camp and continuing to meet in Prospect Park West. If this is the case:
Prepare your child to spend most of the day under shelter outside, visiting cafes and other public spaces, and completing missions that are attuned to the weather conditions. For example, this may include building a tarp fort in the forest, spending time under the porch at Litchfield Villa, creating art, and telling stories to one another as we get cozy under blankets.
Prepare your child to dress appropriately for the weather conditions as described above.
Read the Changes and Cancellation Policy to know your options for credits, refunds, and make-up sessions.
PLAN C: We cancel the adventure day.
In the unfortunate case that there are severe weather advisories or that we consider it is completely unsafe to lead a camp for the day, we will not run the adventure. We run our programs rain or shine, so severe inclement weather for us means dangerous conditions only, such as thunderstorms, wind advisories, or severe cold under 15°F degrees. In the case of a weather advisory, we will send an alert to families via e-mail and WhatsApp by 6am on the day of the camp.
Please review the Changes and Cancellation Policy here to learn more about what the options will be if this is the case.
